Installation of Downstream Stop-Log Gains Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
In the fall of 2023, it was identified that the historic winter guard gates at the downstream end of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal were no longer viable for use and will remain in place until repair/restoration is considered. These gates were previously used for unwatering purposes to inspect, maintain, and repair parts of the lock chamber. A new set of galvanized steel gains will be installed for stop-logs to be used at the downstream end of the lock chamber and will support the unwatering needs on site. Having the ability to unwater the Sault Ste. Marie Canal by Parks Canada staff will ensure passage through the navigation lock, improve operational requirements and asset management, while enhancing visitor experience and ultimately protect the cultural resources for which this National Historic Site is designated. Project activities include hoisting the individual gains with heavy equipment/machinery on previously disturbed ground for an in-water dive team to drill and mount both gains (n=2) on the concrete walls between the lower lock gates and winter guard gates.
