Rehabilitation of the Ottawa River Pathway East

The Capital Pathway is a key asset of the National Capital Commission (NCC) and connects more than 200 km of multi-use pathways. It extends from Gatineau Park, through Ottawa and into the Greenbelt. The pathway network connects the capital's parks, gardens, museums, and main attractions along the way for walking, running, cycling, in-line skating including several winter activities.

The NCC has completed condition assessments along the Capital Pathway to identify areas requiring rehabilitation. To ensure that the Ottawa River Pathway East is fully operational and to maintain pathway user safety, the NCC will be undertaking resurfacing and/or reconstruction of approximately 5 km of the pathway. Sections of the pathway identified for rehabilitation are located between the Aviation Museum and Fairwinds Terrace.

Due to unstable ground near Green's Creek, a 500m section of the pathway will be realigned to prevent further deterioration and improve its long-term resilience.

Construction will follow a three-phased approach and will begin in the summer of 2024 and will be completed by the end of fall 2024.

Objectives:

  • Repair deteriorated pathway segments,
  • Improve the pathway's resiliency,
  • Ensure pathway user safety,
  • Incorporate new Capital Pathway standard guidelines where applicable.

Construction Stages:

  • Site mobilization,
  • Remove existing pavement,
  • Excavate granular base around culverts,
  • Replace culverts requiring reconstruction,
  • Backfill new culverts with granular material,
  • Compact the existing granular foundation under the pathway,
  • Resurface the pathway,
  • Soil placement and seeding,
  • Site demobilization.

The proposed project would take place on National Capital Commission lands, and is subject to federal land use, design, and transaction approval under the National Capital Act for phase 3 of the project.

Latest update

April 17, 2024 – The National Capital Commission intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, the National Capital Commission is inviting public comments until May 17, 2024 respecting that determination.
