Construction of semi-stationary sprinkler irrigation systems in 20 productive farms in the province of Matanzas, Cuba

Implemented by CARE Canada and financed by Global Affairs Canada , this project will contribute to more sustainable, resilient and equitable food systems in the municipalities of Perico and Jovellanos in Matanzas province in Cuba. The project will include the construction and/or rehabilitation of various infrastructures over the life of the project, which will be completed in 3 rounds. In the first round, Semi-Stationary Sprinkler Irrigation Systems will be implemented on 20 production farms that produce vegetables, fruit or root tubers.Of the 20 production farms, 15 of the systems will be powered by solar panels and 5 will be by electric energy.

The solar panel bases and electric energy irrigation systems that will be constructed are expected to be less then 100m2 on developed land with water tubing of 63-75 mm (in-ground) and 16-25 mm (above ground) in diameter. There will be 4 stages to the implementation of the systems, which will include: preparation of the land, assembly, installation and operation. Each production farm will have its own set of activities depending on the type of system (solar or electric), its environment and needs, although they will be very similar given that they are all close in proximity and in the same municipalities of Jovellanos or Perico (province of Matanzas). The activities will most likely include: clearing of vegetation cover, leveling of the land, constructing support structures for the solar panels with a diameter of 1.5m X 1.5m x 1.8m in height, managing solid waste, assembling the solar panels, making improvements to the well suction bases, creating trenches for the water tubing, storing construction materials, assembling the photovoltaic panels, providing electrical connections between the control panels and the pumps, testing for the start-up of the irrigation systems, and consuming water resources to run the irrigation system. Once the systems are completed and functioning, training will be provided to producers for the operation of the system, periodic maintenance, and system monitoring and adjustments.
