Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On July 21, 2008, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because Natural Resources Canada considered providing financial assistance to the proponent.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

Tyson Creek Hydro Corporation (the Proponent) has started construction of a run-of-river hydro project on Tyson Creek. Tyson Creek is approx. 6 km north-northeast of the head of Narrows Inlet and is a tributary of the Tzoonie River. The area is approx. 40 km north of Sechelt in southern British Columbia. The project will have a 10 MW capacity.

The Project will include, but is not limited to, the following components and activities:

- Site surveys and preparation;
- Intake;
- Penstock;
- Powerhouse;
- Storage;
- Staging/laydown areas and spoil areas; and
- 138 kV transmission line interconnect.

The Project will involve the construction, operation, maintenance, and subsequent decommissioning of the proposed hydroelectric installation.

Final Decision

A decision was taken on November 12, 2008 and was that the authority may exercise any power or perform any duty or function with respect to the project because, after taking into consideration the screening report and taking into account the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures, the authority is of the opinion that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
