Notice determination

October 8, 2019 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Sachigo Lake First Nation Water Treatment Plant Project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

The determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • There will be positive impacts on rights of Indigenous peoples, which will result in safe drinking water for the community, and;

  • Mitigation measures proposed for the project during construction activities have been prepared and review by ISC.

Implementation of mitigation measures is required for the project to address:

  • Impacts to surface or groundwater from accidental spills or releases – installation of double-walled fuel tank. Spills will be reported to the Ontario Spills Action Centre and clean up kits will be available.

  • Erosion control measures will be put into place, such as re-seeding disturbed areas.

Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
