Seabird Island Cultural Education, Community Resource Centre and Long-House – Public Comments Invited

May 12, 2020– Infrastructure Canada must determine whether the proposed Seabird Island Cultural Education, Community Resource Centre and Long-House project, located in Agassiz, British Columbia, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Infrastructure Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

All comments received will be considered public. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website (https://iaac-aeic.gc.ca/050/evaluations/Protection?culture=en-CA).

The Proposed Project:

The Proponent, Seabird Island Band, proposes to construct a new cultural and educational community resource centre and long house. The project will serve as a cultural and learning resource centre for all ages of community members, and will be a place of exchanging stories, traditional knowledge, and healing.

The project site is currently used as a soccer field with sod grass regularly maintained. The project site has access to the community infrastructure: water, sewer, and hydro.

Scope of Project Works:

  • Construction of an approximately 5600 square foot (520 m2) cultural centre
  • Construction of an approximately 7000 square foot (650 m2) long house
  • Arts room, community kitchen, carving room and open carving shed
  • Two accessible washrooms
  • Pow wow grounds and round room
