The Proposed Project

Canadian Forces Base 9 Wing Gander occupies approximately 25.7 hectares near the eastern boundary of the Town of Gander. Hangar 1 is used for the majority of the 103 Rescue Unit Helicopter maintenance activities and is located at Latitude: 48.943441 Longitude: -54.575351. The Hangar consists of service bays, mechanical room, office space, a boardroom, kitchen, storage areas, several shops, paint booth, chemical storage areas, washroom and an operations centre. The Hangar is serviced by the Gander municipal water supply and sewer collection systems. The existing sewage lift station in Hangar 1 is located in the Mechanical Room (135W). Due to ongoing issues with sewer gases and the potential presence of methane gas from the lift station located in the Hangar, the Department of National Defence is proposing to remove the existing lift station from the mechanical room and install a new lift station outside the Hangar. The project will involve the decommission of the existing lift station, installation of a new lift station outside and adjacent west of Hangar 1, modify the Hangar's sanitary drainage piping to accommodate the new lift station location and install a new sanitary force main from the new lift station to an existing sanitary manhole located on Power Street. The installation of the new sanitary force main to the existing sanitary manhole located on Power Street will require an excavation footprint of approximately 600 m². Contaminated site (AGA97018) is located adjacent to the project site. Surplus soil and groundwater encountered will be handled and disposed of in conformity with applicable regulations.
