Project Summary:
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is planning a project to replace the existing aging treated timber float and workshop building at the Prince Rupert (Fairview) Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) Search and Rescue (SAR) station.  This float supports the station workshop required for maintenance of the SAR vessels stationed at Prince Rupert, and is accessed via the DFO Prince Rupert (Fairview) Small Craft Harbour operated by the Port Edward Harbour Authority.

The proposed project involves the removal of existing 6.1m x 9.1m creosote treated timber float and workshop building, and replacement with a new 7.01m x 9.75m prefabricated concrete pontoon float installed over the footprint of the existing float. The new float will be moored with two (2) new 18" diameter steel pipe pilings socketed into bedrock.  The new workshop on the float will be a single story structure with an approximate finished area of 35.68m2.

The new float will have a total area of 68.35m2, which is an increase of approx. 12.84m2  from the existing float.  The water depth at the float location will vary from - 6.0m to -15.5m chart datum.

The existing float utilizes polyurethane coated foam billets which are exposed to the environment, and are deteriorating over time.  The new float will have foam billets completely encapsulated in the concrete float protected from the environments.

Project Location:
Fairview CCG SAR Base is located on the western end of Kaien Island, at the southwestern edge of Prince Rupert, BC.  The base is located near the Prince Rupert Ferry Terminal.  The base is accessible via road access, as well as by water for vessel and barge access.
