Steveston Catwalk and Pile Deactivation – Public Comments Invited
January 6, 2022 – The CBC/Radio-Canada must determine whether the proposed Steveston Catwalk and Pile Deactivation project located in Steveston, BC is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
To help inform this determination, CBC/ Radio-Canada is/are inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online.

The Proposed Project
The Project is proposing to remove approximately 710 square meters of existing infrastructure from the intertidal environment at the CBC Transmission Site (the Site) in Steveston, BC. The Project will dismantle two existing platforms, piles, and access catwalk that are no longer in use at the Site. The wooden platforms and catwalks were constructed in the intertidal zone of the delta front of the Fraser River Estuary as part of the Site. The structures are no longer in use. The Project will result in the removal of treated creosote timber and concrete piles from the environment and will eliminate the navigational obstruction they create. The Site will be access from land and from a marine barge approach. A project Environmental Protection Plan (EPP) has been developed for the Project to provide specific avoidance and mitigation strategies to avoid and minimize potential adverse effects to the environment.
The Project is expected to have an overall positive effect on the environment due to the removal of the creosote timber and increased daylighting associated with the decommissioning of the catwalk.
The Project is expected to take approximately 8 weeks from mobilization to demobilization.
