RUNWAY END SAFETY AREA-KELOWNA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – PUBLIC COMMENTS INVITED

January 6 2022 – Transport Canada must determine whether the proposed Runway End Safety Area-Kelowna International Airport, located in Kelowna, BC, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
To help inform this determination, Transport Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public [and may be posted online]. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

The purpose of the project is to create a runway end safety area (RESA) at the Kelowna International Airport (YLW).  A RESA is designed to reduce the severity of damage to an airplane undershooting or overrunning the runway.  The proposed project includes the construction of a RESA at each of Runways 16 and 34 to comply with impending Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).  The proposed amendments to the CARs will require Canadian-certified aerodromes to extend the current safety area from the existing mandated 60 m to a minimum of 150 m at the ends of the runways that serve scheduled commercial passenger-carrying flights.  Total construction area is approximately 42,000 m².
