Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel - Cathodic Protection – Public comments invited
October 21, 2022– As part of its Project and Environmental Review process, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority must determine whether the proposed Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel - Cathodic Protection, located approximately 450 metres east of Second Narrows Bridge on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. Written comments to be received by November 19, 2022.
To help inform this determination and a decision on whether or not to approve the proposed project, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website. In addition, your contact information may be shared with third parties, e.g., the tenant, other relevant agencies, to help respond to your questions and inform possible mitigations.

The proposed project
Metro Vancouver is planning to install a cathodic protection system for the protection of Second Narrows Water Supply Pipelines. The project includes the installation of the cathodic system, which requires:

Trenching a teck cable upland (outside port authority jurisdiction) and laying approximately ten metres of teck cable on the sea floor (within port authority jurisdiction)

Installing an anode bed array, consisting of four tubular mixed metal oxide anode assemblies.

Connecting the teck cable to the anode array bed

Installing anchor chains to secure the anode array bed
The project is anticipated to be completed by January 2023.
