Quadra Confidence Course Deconstruction – HMCS Quadra

August 29, 2023 — The Department of National Defence must decide whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this decision, the Department of National Defence is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. All comments received will be considered public. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing a project. The HMCS Quadra Confidence Course, as part of 19 Wing Comox, is a confidence/obstacle course that is used by cadets in the summer months. The course no longer meets safety standards and will be deconstructed. The project site is near the K'omoks First Nation land on Goose Spit. Additionally, the site is located near sensitive habitat regulated by the Species at Risk Act. The project includes removal of all confidence course features, including concrete footings, tires, netting, and timber and metal structures. Plans for site restoration will be include leveling/regrading of site, backfill of any holes with existing soil, there will be no reseeding of the site. Deconstruction of the course is planned to occur during Fall and Winter 2023. Project is being undertaken by Department of National Defence, 19 Wing Comox, Real Property Operations.
