Gravitational Irrigation System to increase food security of Village of Chando Thalay, northern Pakistan

The not-for-profit Mountain and Glacier Protection Organization proposes to manage glacial melt flow to enhance food security and adaptive resilience of the Village of Chando Thalay, District of Ghanche, Giligit Baltistan, northern Pakistan.  High altitude, extreme winters and lack of opportunity for income diversification makes the community vulnerable to crises and external threats.  Climate change has affected water availability on which the community relies for sustenance. The Project will provide up to 1.47 million m3 water per year of re-directed glacial run-off flow.   This will enhance the food security of 150 households (1200 people) and result in up to 147 hectares of cultivable farmland, forest and range land.

The Project is an irrigation system based on gravitational flow from snow and glacial melt to the village. It is expected to be operational for 8-9 months per year as a result of seasonal variation in temperature and snow melt patterns. The following activities are proposed:

  • Construction of a 1.8 cubic metre water catchment chamber,
  • Installation of 32 cubic metre above-ground water storage tank
  • construction of approximately 1.5 km irrigation channel (combination of piped and paved) within trenches
  • if approved, construction of the Project is proposed in two stages: December 2020 – March 2021 and April – September 2021.
