  • My primary concern is that the Provincial Government is relying on a decades old Environmental Assessment Approval to build this highway.   MTO is now only conducting a Class EA study.  This is not a new full EA study, but rather a continuation of the original, decades old, EA approved highway route.  This new study is essentially a detailed design of the route approved in the original EA Approval.    Class environmental assessment studies are only permitted under the Environmental Assessment Act where there is a pre-existing, inactive, but still valid, Environmental Assessment Approval for the project.  Given that the previous Liberal government abandoned this project, in or around 2006, it is likely the original EA approval is now invalid if for no other reason than MTO defaulted on the Conditions of Approval for this project.   However, under our current government, as we have ...

  • I was absolutely gobsmacked when I heard that a NEW highway was being considered to plow through one of Ontario's major food producing greenlands. You don't pave over farmers' fields and come out ahead! Not only do you remove food production for the region, it is proposed to cross over or destroy many sensitive waterways. It was firmly rejected as unnecessary by the area's regional and municipal councils. As such, it must be subject to a full environmental assessment by the federal government. The Ontario government has weakened the rules for EAs in the Province and is not even waiting for the results of an EA under the weakened rules before starting construction on elements, such as bridges, for this highway. Attachment Complete a federal EIA for Holland Marsh Highway

  • The Holland Marsh Highway will destroy huge swathes of Ontario's most important ecological and environmental lands, the federal government MUST complete a robust Environmental Impact Study. The local provincial government under Doug Ford is not only refusing to complete a full provincial EIA, but is commencing construction of bridges and overpasses without even completing the weakened provincial EIA. The last provincial EIA completed for this highway showed that it would significantly pollute local groundwater, which is a big problem because the Holland marsh filters huge amounts of water before it drains into Lake Simcoe, a water system that is already under significant urban and agricultural stress. This highway would also be disastrous for climate change, inducing demand for more car travel. Please force the Province of Ontario to complete a robust Federal EIA before building this disastrous project! Thank you!
