  • As a First Nation living immediately downstream from this project, we will live with the consequences for many generations to come. It is our children who will drink the water, eat the fish, pick the wild rice, swim, and learn what it means to be Anishinaabe on this river whose waters will carry the effluent from this gold mine if it is built. It is our people who will search in vain for moose and caribou to hunt on the landscape that has had its forests fragmented and degraded by access roads, clearcuts, seismic lines, pits, trenches, clearings, and mines. It is our people who will be impacted if the tailings dam fails. It is our people who will be poisoned when toxics leach into the water. It is our people whose fear and anxiety, already far too high and fatal due to the mercury crisis, will be heightened by the threat this mining project poses to our wellbeing. Grassy Narrows does not consent to the Great Bear Gold Project. And Grassy Narrows does not consent to the IS ...

  • Sante Enviro Health Inc. Pa ge 1 Comments on the Great Bear Gold Project from Sante Enviro Health – February 20, 2026 In the last few years in Canada, the increase of wildfires, specifically in these remote areas, in scope and length of the wildfire season and intensity of fires, time of the season, makes it a very high priority for emergency preparedness. Access for firefighters, or any kind of emergency response team, requires adept planning, and should be an integral part of any mining operation. Outreach to those most directly impacted and involved with emergency preparedness systems must be done in advance, akin to fire drills, to better prepare all involved, not just the first responders. This planning takes place at all three levels of government, federal, provincial and municipal. Coordination is imperative to have a smooth and effective response for any given emergency. For Kinross as well, any unimagined consequences of a flood or wildfire on ...

  • 1 Comments on the Draft Public Participation Plan for the Great Bear Gold Project Submitted by Catherine Doucet June 7, 2024 Overall, the Draft Public Participation Plan is very precise on presenting timelines and explaining what the process involves. Also, all the ways that interested parties may become involved. This allows for anyone impacted by the project to engage at all of the stages of the Impact Assessment process. It allows for being informed and clearly delineating how to participate. This should always be done as early on as is possible to provide an opportunity for the public to be engaged. They will then be included in considering the many and varied impacts that are associated with the project. Public participation tools - Page 5 The tools provided for the public appear quite comprehensive. There are multiple entry points for potential commenters to be engaged in the process, encapturing all ways that the public nowadays accesses ...

  • 1 Comments on the Draft Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines Submitted by Catherine Doucet June 7, 2024 The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC), in its Draft Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines has provided a thorough list of most of the aspects needed to ensure that Kinross’s Great Bear Gold Project will be ‘climate change ready’. Section 13 – Effects of Potential Accidents or Malfunctions In Section 13.1, Risk Assessment, the proponent must ‘provide an explanation of how these events were identified (e.g. information sources, recognized risk assessment methodology, professional expertise, similar project, participants’ input)’. Overall, the points that are elucidated by IAAC in Section 13.1 – Risk assessment, are very comprehensive, requiring the identification of risks from any accidents, specifically, should they occur in close proximity to the mine site. Similarly for Section 14, Effects of the Environment on the Project, the same process ...
