Vegetation Removal - Communication line to Dome Mountain; 5 Wing Goose Bay, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
Communication line to Dome Mountain carries important communications for 5 Wing Goose Bay, Bell Aliant and NavCanada. At the start of the line and the end of the line for approximately five hundred meters (500 m) on each side there are joint use poles with power utility lines. Removal of vegetation is necessary to prevent potential disruption in important communications. Vegetation in these areas have grown into dense forest presenting a danger to disrupting DND's important communication systems for the airfield. All trees and larger shrubs will be removed from five meters (5 m) on each side of the communication line. The main footprint for vegetation removal will be ten meters (10 m) wide and ten kilometers (10 km) long. Project scope will also include removal of some individual large trees located outside of the five meters (5 m) from the overhead lines since these trees may pose risk to lines. All trees and vegetation will be removed by a contractor specialized in this work using specialized equipment, tree harvester, forwarder, mulchers and professional arborists trained in manual felling of trees. All larger trees (DBH greater than 8 cm) will be cut and piled so they can be used for firewood or logs. Project is proposed to be carried out in fall of 2019.
