BHP Canada Exploration Drilling Project — Public Comments Invited

May 16, 2019 — The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) must decide whether a federal environmental assessment is required for the proposed BHP Canada Exploration Drilling Project, located 325 kilometres northeast of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

To help inform this decision, the Agency is seeking comments from the public and Indigenous groups on the project and its potential effects on the environment, as described in the summary of the project description.

All comments received will be considered public. Written comments in either official language must be submitted by June 5, 2019 to:

The Proposed Project

BHP is proposing to conduct an exploration drilling project within offshore exploration licences in the Orphan Basin, located 325 kilometres northeast of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador in the Atlantic Ocean. As proposed, the BHP Canada Exploration Drilling Project would allow the proponent, over a nine-year period, to determine the presence, nature, and quantities of the potential hydrocarbon resource in exploration licences 1157 and 1158.
