Notice of Intent to make a determination

Norway House Cree Nation Water Intake Replacement and Lagoon Cell Decommissioning  – Public Comments Invited

9 December 2020 – Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed project located in Norway House Cree Nation  is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.  To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

Written comments must be submitted by 9 January 2021.

The Proposed Project

The Norway House Cree Nation community requires an upgrade to the raw water intake system for the
WTP and decommissioning of the old wastewater lagoon Cells #1 and #2. The existing raw water intake
fish screen in Jack River will be replaced with a Z-alloy screen to prevent the accumulation of zebra
mussels. A chlorine disinfectant line will be installed alongside the existing intake pipe and attached at
the end of pipe to keep the interior of the intake pipe clear of zebra mussels and algae.
The old lagoon Cells #1 and #2 will be decommissioned by draining the cells, removing the valves, valve
boxes, intercell pipes, aeration equipment, spillways, dewatering the sludge, leveling the site with the
perimeter dikes and dewatered sludge, extend the forcemain from the WTP to the old lagoon Cell #3 for
backwash discharge and installing a new section of forcemain between the WTP and the new
wastewater treatment lagoon.
