Wiarton Breakwater Replacement – Public Comments Invited

May 6, 2022 – Fisheries and Oceans Canada must determine whether the proposed Wiarton Breakwater Replacement project, located in Wiarton, ON on the western shore of Georgian Bay, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this determination, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours intends to replace the breakwater pier at the Town Launch Ramp in Wiarton, ON also known as Bluewater Park Boat Launch. Wiarton is located on the west shore of Georgian Bay approximately 30 km northwest of Owen Sound.  

Overall the scope of the project includes:

  • Removal and disposal of the existing concrete sidewalk
  • Regrading the existing stone below the breakwater as well as adding new core stone to increase the crest height of the breakwater
  • Adjusting the existing armour stone and/or installing new armour stone to establish the new crest height and slope
  • Installing a reinforced concrete deck
