July 26, 2023 - Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed RM of Shellbrook Gravel Permit, to be located on Sturgeon Lake First Nation, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

The Proposed Project

Permit for the removal of 21,000 y3 of gravel over a 3 year period (7000y3 - 2023, 7000y3 - 2024, 7000y3 - 2025) from an existing gravel pit on Sturgeon Lake First Nation land. No new infrastructure or roads are required to access the site and gravel. Surface water is over 500 metres away and no dewatering of the pit is expected. No vegetation, top or subsoil will need to be removed to access the gravel. All health and safety rules will be adhered to. Any spills will be cleaned up to acceptable standards and reported to the appropriate authority. Refueling will be done in a designated area and drip pans will be used to avoid spills and drops into the environment.
