Joint Review Panel Issues Report On Jackpine Mine Expansion Project

Ottawa, July 9, 2013 – The Joint Review Panel, established to review the proposed Jackpine Mine Expansion project, has released Decision 2013-011, which grants conditional Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) approval to Shell Canada Energy to construct and operate the mine expansion. The Panel report has also been delivered to the federal Minister of the Environment for review and decision-making under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012.

The Panel conducted a public hearing from October 23 to November 21, 2012, in Fort McMurray and Edmonton, Alberta.

The Panel has made 88 recommendations to the federal and provincial governments. The Panel also sets out 22 conditions for Shell. The recommendations and conditions can be found in the appendices of the Panel report.

About the Project

Shell Canada Energy is proposing to expand the Jackpine Mine project. The expansion would include additional mining areas and associated processing facilities, utilities and infrastructure. The project would be located about 70 km north of Fort McMurray on the east side of the Athabasca River. The project would increase bitumen production by 15,900 cubic metres per day, bringing production at the mine to 47,700 cubic metres per day.

About the Joint Review Panel

The Joint Review Panel for the proposed Jackpine Mine Expansion Project is an independent body, mandated by the Minister of the Environment and the Chairman of the Energy Resources Conservation Board (now the AER) in September 2011, to assess the environmental effects of the proposed project and review the Application.
