  • Hi Debra, I clipped this image from google earth and thought perhaps you might like to see it.  It shows the footprint of exploration in the Ring of Fire. It’s not even the full footprint but it’s telling and this is before full mine development. In case you aren’t familiar with exploration rules in Ontario, there are no requirements for restoration of land after exploration projects are completed. Proponents must cap drill holes and keep materials (drill casings and fluids) 30 m away from water bodies.  See part III of the provincial standards for early exploration (attached).   Also, these activities do not go through provincial environmental review. The “trails” are especially worrisome as you can see from below. While Ontario claims early exploration impacts are benign, in this ecosystem, they are permanent.   This is why we think the current footprint of exploration must be included in the ...

  • Provincial Standards for Early Exploration Introduction These Provincial Standards have been developed as part of the implementation of the graduated regulatory regime for early exploration under the Mining Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. M.14 as amended by Bill 173, the Mining Amendment Act, 2009, S.O. 2009, c. 21 (the “Mining Act”), and the Exploration Plans and Exploration Permits regulation under the Mining Act, [O. Reg. 308/12]. There are three Parts to these Provincial Standards: I) Requirements for Carrying Out Exploration Plan Activities; II) Requirements for Carrying Out Exploration Permit Activities; and III) Requirements for Rehabilitation of Exploration Plan and Exploration Permit Activities. The requirements of Parts I and II apply when the respective early exploration activities are being carried out, while Part III Rehabilitation applies when the early exploration activities have been completed. In the event there is any conflict ...

  • As a regional environmental non-governmental organization, Northwatch’s primary areas of interest relate to the impacts and potential impacts of Ring of Fire developments on northeastern Ontario and the lands and people of northeastern Ontario. While our primary concerns are those that impact the region of northeastern Ontario, we do have associated additional concerns and interest which are broader, geographically. Our areas of interest with respect to Ring of Fire developments include: the direct impacts of Ring of Fire project activities which are outside the McFaulds Lake (in northwestern Ontario) and have been variously announced to be intended to take place in Sudbury or Algoma districts of northeastern Ontario, namely the smelting / processing of chromium and other metals. the energy demands of the project, the transportation routes and impacts, and the carbon footprint of the project the downstream impacts of the project ...
