Dear Minister Wilkinson,

Again, thank you for the decision to designate the Castle Project for an impact assessment.

On behalf of the West Kootenay EcoSociety and our 20,000 supporters, we encourage you to please appoint a review panel for the impact assessment to ensure an open process, driven by independent scientific evidence, that will allay concerns from the public, First Nations in Canada and the U.S. and U.S. government entities about the assessment process. Health and safety is top of minds for Canadians in this extra sensitive COVID time and any added health and safety challenges deserve public engagement.

Given the significant public concern about the direct and cumulative impacts from the Castle Project, a review panel would provide a transparent and independent process to address past problems and restore public confidence about Canada’s ability to manage impacts within the Elk Valley.

Regards,
Montana
