West Moberly First Nation Water System Improvements
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
West Moberly First Nations' main settlement (West Moberly Lake IR #168A) is located approximately 80 km southwest of the City of Fort St. John and 22 km north of the District of Chetwynd in the Peace River Region of British Columbia. West Moberly First Nations has been working for several years to address the long term infrastructure needs of the community, as well as the ongoing water quality problems at their existing water treatment facility.
The water quality in Moberly Lake experiences elevated turbidity at certain times of the year and the current water treatment process (slow sand filters) at West Moberly Lake IR #168A no longer provides adequate treatment for the raw water conditions during high turbidity events. The proposed water system improvements are intended to ensure that a safe and reliable water supply is established at West Moberly Lake IR #168A. The existing slow sand filtration is not expected to remove more than 5 - 10 % of the raw water total organic carbon (TOC) which leads to the formation of DBP such as tri - halo methanes and haloaceticacids (THMs and HAAs). The presence of THMs and HAAs have been confirmed in the distribution system. The slow sand filters do not remove significant levels of true colour and may be overloaded during freshet as increased turbidity levels result in increased headloss as a result of the accumulation of solids at the top of the filter.
The existing water treatment facility will be retained and a new building will be added in the adjacent area, to house the proposed additional treatment system. Rapid sand filtration will be preceded by a chemical pre-treatment with the goal of reducing turbidity, DOC, TOC, colour and iron present in the source water. The proposed water treatment equipment will be housed in the new water treatment building.
