McLeod Lake Indian Band Domestic and Fire Water System Upgrades

The existing bolted steel standpipe reservoir offers insufficient fire flow protection rates, volume, and pressure for both residential and commercial buildings.  The existing reservoir has experienced freezing, resulting in structural damage and extended water residence times that have contributed to reduced water quality.  The reservoir is approaching the end of a typical service lifespan, and the roof and interior are currently unsafe to access, limiting complete and thorough inspections.

Options are currently being explored as part of the design phase of the replacement/upgrade project.  The feasibility study for the project resulted in Option 1 being chosen by the McLeod Lake Indian Band, which coinsists of:

•  The continued use of existing water supply wells PW86-1 and PW15-1

•  Installation of a new treatment/ booster station east of Sekani Drive, adjacent to the intersection of Sekani Drive and Reservoir Road (near existing pumphouse).

•  Installation of a new in-ground concrete water storage reservoir adjacent to new treatment/ booster station, sized to meet domestic water demands and residential fire flows prescribed by Fire Underwriters Survey 2020.

•  Connection to existing potable water distribution system.

•  Installation of a separate new fire system with lake intake, fire pump, and dedicated fire line sized to meet fire flow demands for the commercial and non-residential buildings.

•  Installation of the new dedicated fire line to existing and proposed hydrants in the vicinity of existing non-residential community building and the proposed new Wellness Center as well as stubs in each direction for future expansion.

Option 1 proposes a reservoir that will be sized to meet the domestic water demand fire flows for one- and two-family homes. The change from an existing above-ground reservoir to an in-ground concrete storage reservoir will reduce freezing risk and offer preferred operation and maintenance conditions. Option 1 also offers design features that will enhance the effectiveness and performance of the system.

Land area consists of road right-of-ways, cleared land, and cleared land with some recent regrowth of shrubs and saplings.
