Sandhills Substation Generator Upgrade
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
Northwest Territories Power Corp is undergoing a scheduled replacement of the power generating unit at Sandhill's Substation 60°08′57.96″N, 113°33'00.85″W. The replacement process includes removing the old generator, fuel tank, and housing. The new generator will be fully enclosed and mounted on a dual walled fuel tank. The replacement fuel tank is a smaller model and has a lower risk of spilling than the existing tank system. The old unit currently has a tank and generator unit inside of a shed that is dilapidated and has been determined to be no longer fit for service. NTPC is going to install a modular packaged unit with a double wall tank which is cleaner and has a smaller footprint than what is currently in site. A rubber tire loader will be used to remove the existing generator, fuel tank and generator housing and to place the new unit. The decommissioned unit will be transported offsite using a flat deck trailer and truck. There will be a slight obstruction of highway traffic during mob in and mob out of the equipment. Traffic signage and a flagging person will be installed during these periods and subsequently removed. Equipment will remain on site for the duration of the project with spill trays placed underneath them when idle or not in use.
