Duncan's First Nation: CUCJ0 - Solid Waste Transfer Station

Duncan's First Nation is proposing to construct and operate a Waste Transfer Station to receive and sort the community's residential waste streams including large items, recyclables, residential renovation waste, tires, household hazardous materials, electronics, whitegoods, propane tanks, and derelict vehicles. The waste will be hauled from the new transfer station by Duncan's First Nation to third-party operated landfills. The transfer station will have a 30-year service life with provision for future expansion to accommodate community growth.

The Transfer Station is located in a previously disturbed borrow pit requiring clearing of second-growth vegetation. The Project will involve the construction of an elevated platform for disposal of residential waste, a designated household hazardous waste collection site with appropriate environmental protections envisioned as a set of modified "sea-can" shipping containers equipped with secondary containment, holding tanks, collection and storage areas for safe temporary storage of household recyclables, derelict vehicles, and bulky items, and an attendant's shelter.

Due to previous disturbance it is unlikely Species at Risk will be impacted. A wildlife sweep and biophysical assessment was conducted to support an initial application for review, and to support due-diligence environmental management objectives.
