I do not live in the immediate area of Cochrane Hill but I have a strong interest in the St. Mary’s River and Sherbrooke and surrounding area. I am a volunteer member of and director on the Board of the St. Mary’s River Association (SMRA). I also have a property on the St. Mary’s River and have been fortunate enough to enjoy the river and many activities associated with the river including fishing for salmon and trout, canoeing, kayaking and walking certain areas adjoining the river. I am not opposed to responsible mining if it occurs in the right place. My message is simple. It may be rural but the St. Mary’s River is not the right place for a gold mine and its associated risks.   • My name is Madeline Conacher and I live on the north shore of NS near Tatamagouche. I am submitting a comment because I am very concerned about the plight of the environment in NS and the seeming lack of concern by the NS government. I have read alot about gold mining and we need to stop this kind of development in NS immediately. My concerns  - The Cochrane Hill project is part of larger project - 4 gold mines in the Sherbrook area.They are all connected and any assessment should take in the impact of all four projects. - Atlantic Golds past record  - AG has been charged with numerous environmental conditions.  These past infractions show that AG can not be trusted to meet future environmental conditions so the project should not be approved  - Past promises - the predecessor to AG promised to procure by 2012 a 256 conservation area to compensate for past envir. destruction.   • I am opposed to the gold mining plans in Nova Scotia. It will destroy the environment, not only on the mine site but also due to road construction or extending of road construction to the site. Even though the mining company tells the public that the mining activities will not negatively impact the environment, the risks of leaking toxic chemicals are still present and the benefits of the little revenue that the Province will get from the mining company will not outweigh the environmental risks. The amount of rock that needs to be taken to get a bit of gold is tremendous. I do not know the exact details but tons of rocks need to be mined to get grams of gold. I believe that the province of Nova Scotia and Canada in general should focus on preserving and restoring nature instead of destroying nature. We depend on nature for our survival.   • As a property owner on the Eastern Shore, an avid fisher and an overall concerned Nova Scotian I want to see gold mining in NS eradicated before we completely eradicate our natural environment. Cochrane Hill, one of four open pit gold mines proposed by Atlantic Gold on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore will have long-term, negative, irreversible consequences in exchange for marginal, short-term gains by a foreign entity. The project at Cochrane Hill proposes the disruptive and unsustainable use of Archibald Lake as the mine's primary water supply, and the excavation and removal of millions of tons or arsenic laden rock ore containing arguably insignificant gold concentrations. The impact will be devastating to the immediate vicinity of the mine and the surrounding watershed, an impact that will be irreversible.   • When a company comes to Nova Scotia to rape our landscape and remove precious metals while damaging the environment I must speak up.  The sight of huge trucks destroying the ecosystems and tearing up our roads upsets me. The Cochrane hill site is too fragile for such mining.  Its a small area sandwiched between the ocean and a precious salmon river.  A big mine would create an immense, toxic tailings pond that would loom 270 feet above the scenic road that is the life line between Antigonish and Sherbrooke towns.  It would rob the water from the nearby lakes and rivers and threaten this beautiful environment forever.  Dust from the mine would pollute our air, it can travel up to 40 miles I hear and cover our properties and forests with a thick layer of dust.  Big trucks full of mined rock have to travel 2 hours along the main road where people live on either side of the road to a different site to be processed.  Thus these trucks will be ...

  • Our family has been in this area since the early '70s. Fishing, hiking and exploring the St Mary's River watershead and adjecent locals, its an ecological gem. Lakes such as Archibald and MacDonald are prime brook trout areas. The river itself is now for the most part protected to a degree however, I believe that the Cochrane Hill mine will be detrimental and pose serious hazards to the river and surrounding area. The protection of the area vastly outweighs the short term benefits the mine will provide the area. The utilization of local fresh water from Archibald Lake and the surrounding water sources and table will certainly have a long term effect on the natural environment as well as other lakes in the local such as MacDonalds Lake, Rocky Lake and nearby wetlands. The toxic tailings pond coming in at approximately 40+ acres and the associated dam at 70 meters in height will pose an eternal risk to this pristine ecological and tourism area. The idea that our government would even entertain an open pit gold mine along the St. Mary's River is absurd. For those of you who have not experienced this rare gem of a watershed within Nova Scotia, let me paint a picture for you. When you visit the St. Mary’s River you will feel transported to paradise. The area provides tremendous ecological value, from it’s aquatic life and endangered species to large stands of eastern hemlocks and old growth forests. When on the river you hear no sounds but those of nature.   • I think that we need to learn from our past here and not move forward with a company who allowed areas around their previous jobs to be impacted negatively in a huge way.  This watershed is a gem and deserves to be protected. The potential consequences and danger to the environment and endangered spices are not worth the risk for a company with a poor track record to come in just to make more money.  We live in a beautiful province and it should be protected .

  • I am very familiar with the landscapes of the St. Mary's River. As an artist and naturalist I have been fortunate enough to explore both the river and the surrounding watersheds for many years. I have also done several avian studies in the area of the proposed gold mine for other land owner interests. The old growth forests and unique ecosystems of the area are an absolute gem and I would consider them an outstanding examples of both riparian zones and Acadian Forest  in the region.   • Being strongly against such a destructive industry, there is a clear understanding of this proposed project the lasting effect it would leave on the environment.  This proposed project has no "valued components" to be examined.  Gold is not a necessity; it will only benefit shareholders while the gold sits in a vault.  The immediate area of the project will see total devastation.  Surrounding areas, species and water systems will be impacted by blasting, leaching of hazardous minerals, dust, light and noise with this operation running constantly.  And, will indefinitely be at risk of total decimation of species and local communities.

  • Not only do I strongly oppose this proposed mine I cannot believe that the Province of Nova Scotia would even entertain the thought of allowing any kind of industrial operation to be placed so close to such an environmentally sensitive area such as the St Marys River. Having one of the few annual returning runs of endangered Atlantic salmon makes this river valley very precious to every Nova Scotian today not to mention the generations to come. You can travel all over this province and see the scars of past geneations of mining and other industrial projects that have also left their toxic legacy behind. Most of these areas remain as they were left because they are now the responsibility of the government and are to costly to clean up.   • I strongly oppose the Cochrane Hill Gold Mine for many reasons : Cochrane Hill has only 4 1/2 years of mining decent ore, plus a couple years of processing some substantially less profitable (maybe even marginal) low grade stockpiles). The majority of waste rock is definitely acid generating at this location. The waste dumps are certainly a question mark there since they will be on the St Mary's side of the drainage.   The water source they want to drain water from is Archibald’s Lake.  Home to native brook trout.  This also drains into the St Mary’s River.   • I am strongly opposed to this project. Nova Scotia has a finite amount of untouched wilderness and we are destroying it with projects like this. This is not a permenant source of jobs & income, it is temporary. The land will never be fully restored to its natural being if this project were to proceed. The negative impact to the environment and wildlife is not worth it. The St. Marys river is one of the few remaining rivers in our province with a sustainable atlantic salmon population. The st marys river association & atlantic salmon federation has invested millions into saving atlantic salmon in this river system. Approving this project could completely ruin all the efforts put in over the past decades.  Again, I am strongly opposed to this project. Save the precious environment Nova Scotia has remaining, dont ruin it with gold mines and the pollution that comes with them.

  • Atlantic Gold, now an Australian Corporation called St Barbara; has displayed lack of care to wildlife and they are willing to break the law. They are currently in court for 32 violations of the weak NS Environmental Act. Corporations treat getting caught as an expense. Historical gold mining from our three gold rushes has caused damage to our environment, so much it has been understudied. We have some of the highest cancer rates in our country. That needs to be studied before politicians let a bunch of investors fly into our province and plan future projects.  Lastly gold is underpriced considering our inflating money supply. Canada is a country with no reserves, while others are accumulating. It is rare and the most useful metal. What is left in this province is low grade and should be kept for future generations.

  • Allowing a 500 acre open pit mine and tailings pond at the proposed location poses too much ecological risk.  It would be an outright insult to the many volunteers and donors who have worked for years to restore this beautiful river and its imperilled salmon.  If Canada wants to hold its head up when negotiating with international players in the interests of salmon that return to our rivers, we just can't be permitting projects like this.  In addition to the ecological risks, the mine would greatly degrade the attractiveness of the area for tourism and would be a black mark on Nova Scotia in the national competition for nature and conservation-oriented visitors.

  • Research is ongoing at multiple universities in the Maritimes(including several in Nova Scotia) on heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic entering the rivers from historic NS gold mining activities. They suggest these heavy metals enter the food chain and bio-accumulate in various fish species - of which are the historic energy source (food) and economic backbone of our province. This was not only irresponsible but also negligence on the behalf of our provincial government and they could be and should be held accountable for this. One preliminary study shows extremely high arsenic levels in Tomcod and extremely high levels of mercury in Striped bass and American eel. All of these species are currently consumed by Nova Scotians regularly.
