Sir Humphrey Gilbert Building Radar Communications Site

The Canadian Coast Guard is undertaking a project to construct a new Radar Communications Site at the Sir Humphrey Gilbert Building. The site is located on Duckworth Street in St. John's, Newfoundland. The radar installation is located on the roof of the existing building.
The purpose of developing this new radar site includes but is not limited to:
- Enhancing marine situational awareness for the Coast Guard and other federal partners such as National Defense and Port Authorities;
- Addressing immediate gaps in radar coverage on Canada's East coast in support of marine safety activities;
- Enhancing the Coast Guard's ability to identify vessels and to improve the common operating picture in the area;
- Providing enhanced marine situational awareness for vessels approaching and exiting the St. John's Harbour.
In general, project works are well underway on this site. Radar Installation is Scheduled for April 2022 with Permanent Radar operation scheduled for May 2022.
The scope of the project is to build an approximately 1m steel radar platform with a 3.6m diameter rotating radar on the roof of the Sir Humphrey Gilbert Building. The installation will follow all relevant industry standards. Associated equipment will be housed within the building. Access to the building is restricted to the public.

The purpose of this posting is to comply with Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada (formerly Industry Canada) Publication CPC-2-0-03. General information relating to antenna systems is available from the Government of Canada on the ISED website (www.ic.gc.ca/towers). Site work and operations will be conducted in compliance with Health Canada's Safety Code 6 radiofrequency exposure guidelines. It was determined that no aeronautical obstruction markers were required under Transport Canadas guidelines.
