Construction of a mountain bike skills trail in Newman Sound, Terra Nova National Park

This project involves the construction of a 565 m single-track mountain biking loop in Newman Sound campground. The biking trail is intended to provide entry level technical features to target young riders and family groups and will adhere to the standards set out by Parks Canada's Trail Classification document. Provision of this infrastructure is meant to decrease the use of ‘unauthorized trails' and their associated ecological disturbance. The site selected for this trail partially encompasses previously disturbed roadbeds and campsites that offers a firm surface for construction of this trail. Construction of the trail will involve the use of a mini-excavator to prepare the trail surface and to create ‘skills features' including gravel banks and/or wooden ramps. Depending on surface features following excavation, the use of stone material and/or mulch may be required to establish the trail bed. Vegetation clearing will also include the use of chainsaws and brush-saws. Preliminary field visits have identified the need to remove some over-story trees (<20) in order to provide a clear and safe travel route.
