Removal of Timber Fender Floats
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
This project comprises the removal of timber fender floats and associated cabling and rigging structures from the water. The floats were added to the canal at the time of commercial operation and have become natural wood debris over time, however they have deteriorated and are now posing risks to recreational activities in the canal. The floats are located in a few areas along the canal and will be permanently stored on the West End of North St. Mary's Island, at least 30 meters away from the water. The plan is to remove the floats and associated structures in their entirety using cranes and possibly other heavy equipment. The activities will occur outside of lock operating season. This project will be assessed with a basic impact assessment.
