Construction of a Cattle Exclusion Snake Fence - 3rd Canadian Division Support Base

The Department of National Defence (DND) has proposed a project which involves the building of a 3 kilometer fence around wetlands in order to protect Critical Habitat for Species at Risk bryophyte populations from grazing cattle. It will be built a minimum for 30 meters from the high water edge and 50 meters from the extent of the bryophyte populations. The area has been flagged by a Species at Risk bryophyte expert, and construction personnel will not enter the designated critical habitat zone during fence construction. The fence will be built predominantly by hand and on the surface with minimal digging. The design for the fence will follow provincial standards for wood cattle fencing.

August 17, 2022— The Department of National Defence issued its Notice of Determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
