Keewaywin First Nation New Landfill Access Road Construction
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
This project aims to facilitate the construction of the landfill access road as well as the landfill construction at Keewaywin First Nation.
- Constructing an access road (approximately 6 km) to the new landfill site with appropriate drainage.
- Clean-up and closure of the existing landfill site, and other waste disposal sites that were identified during the Keewaywin First Nation Solid Waste Management Study.
- Constructing a new landfill site with the following features:
- Waste storage cell sized to accommodate 20 years of waste, with room for future expansion
- Waste diversion areas (i.e., for hazardous waste, white goods, tires, e-waste, etc.)
- Groundwater monitoring wells
- Perimeter fencing around the site with gated entry
- Fire break (buffer around the cell with no trees)
- Stormwater pond and drainage ditches to direct and collect surface water

November 08, 2022 – Indigenous Services Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting public comments Public Comment Period on Intent to Make a Determination (iaac-aeic.gc.ca) until December 8, 2022 respecting the determination. .
