Davieaux Island - Davieaux Island Lightstation - Abatement, Repairs, and Debris Removal

The Project will include exterior and interior abatement (lead, asbestos and mould) of eight buildings and several structures on located on Davieaux Island.  The project will also include debris clean up, concrete repairs and the demolition of one building. Davieaux Island is accessed by boat or helicopter from the Canadian shore of Lake Superior.

Key project activities include the following:

  • Camp Construction (tree clearing and installing temporary facilities to support workers on site for the duration of the project: May use pallet jack or similar equipment
  • Trail Development / Staging Route (tree clearing to ensure access to project work areas and camp location): Manual tools, handheld power tools and equipment
  • Abatement Work on buildings and structures on site: Manual tools, handheld power tools and chemical gel or paste, sealing agent (HazMat PPE for lead, mould, asbestos)
  • Demolition of the storage building, following abatement: Manual tools, handheld power tools, may require mobile equipment such as telehandler
  • Concrete Repair and Conservation Treatment at the lighthouse and pumphouse: Manual tools, handheld power tools including sandblaster, epoxy injector (PPE)
  • Waste Storage / Transportation (temporary storage on site, and disposal off site): May require mobile equipment such as telehandler
  • Resurfacing, Painting, Sealing of Surfaces following abatement and repair activities: Paint and manual tools

The Project is expected to take approximately three months with work anticipated to begin in early April and completed by the end of June 2025.

November 30, 2024 Fisheries and Oceans Canada Small Craft Harbours has issued it's Notice of Determination and determined that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
