K'il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay Pavement Rehabilitation Project

Transport Canada is proposing a variety of improvements at K'il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay Airport (formerly Sandspit Airport), located at the northeast corner of Moresby Island, near the community of K'il Kun (Sandspit). The main goals of the project are to expand existing parking lots, rehabilitate the existing apron, and maintain and rehabilitate airside and groundside pavement.

Activities of the proposed project include:

  • Upgrade of existing overflow parking lot, including a new asphalt surface with sixty additional stalls and two driveway entries. The upgrade includes new signage, line markings, and lighting infrastructure.
  • Expansion, paving, and regrading of the existing employee parking lot, including new signage and line markings.
  • Reconstruction of the existing apron asphalt structure, including mill and overlay of existing asphalt, adding a new granular base, paving a new asphalt mat, and grading.
  • Removal and replacement of the current apron trench drainage system, including the addition of two new oil-water separators.
  • Addition of a new pavement concrete parking pad on the apron.
  • Rehabilitation of groundside service roads and North Beach Road. Rehabilitation activities differ for each road and include replacement and installation of asphalt and full lane width mill and overlay.
  • Localized repairs of groundside pavement depressions and defects.
  • Maintenance of existing airfield pavement and runway edges, including routing and sealing cracks, replacing existing sealant, topsoil re-grading, edge trimming, gravel edge leveling, and runway light adjustments.
  • Airfield pavement marking removals and refreshes, as per TP 312 standards.
