Seafood Offloading Facility
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority is reviewing a project to repair and construct new infrastructure for a seafood offloading facility, located adjacent to the Northland Cruise Terminal. The project will include demolishing an existing building, the repair and replacement of timber piles and concrete footings, and the construction of a new, above-deck seafood offloading operation.
The site is 0.14 hectares, with most of the project footprint being the dock and pile substructure. It is located in a light-industrial waterfront location with similar adjacent users and has been operating as a seafood offloading facility for decades as part of Prince Rupert's fishing industry. The site has been vacant since 2018 and is currently in a state of disrepair.
The project scope includes the demolition and removal of the existing 450m2 pre-engineered steel frame structure, repair and/or replacement of the existing deck and utilities, paving of a parking area, installation of the new 151m2 building, an ice container, 2 water tanks, the relocation of the existing tide gauge shed, new handrailing and lighting, and the installation of new steel columns and corrugated metal roofing for a portion of the site.
The building removal will not include the removal of any foundations or excavation work. The utilities will be modified to fit the new operational configurations. The pile repair and replacement work involves like-for-like replacement of the existing timber piles that are currently in poor condition. No new ground will be disturbed.
Construction is anticipated to occur from December 2021 to May 2022. Project date and duration will be dependent on contractor's methodology and weather conditions. Key equipment used during construction may include a crane, a jackhammer, a pile driving barge, a concrete and/or asphalt truck, flat-bed trucks, and additional loading equipment.
