Canadian Coast Guard Holland Rock Helipad Rebuild

Holland Rock is a site which contains shared infrastructure between Canadian Coast Guard and Environment and Climate Change Canada. The site consists of foundations remaining from a lightstation that burnt down in the 1946, a small concrete building housing electrical equipment and batteries, a marine navigational aid and weather tower and a collapsed wooden helipad on concrete footings.

The Canadian Coast Guard is undertaking a project to construct a new helicopter landing pad at Holland Rock. The current wooden landing pad has collapsed and there is no safe landing spot at the site. They propose to build the new elevated, 18x18 foot, concrete landing pad anchored into the bedrock. A concrete pad will be more durable to with stand the exposure of a high energy environment.

In general, project works are proposed to start in early November or December. Construction period should be just under a week. Canadian Coast Guard employees would fabricate wood formwork, scribed to the bedrock surface and then pour concrete via crane on barge to minimize the distance the concrete travels and eliminate possible wet concrete entering the water.
