Port Maitland – Breakwater Rehabilitation

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Small Craft Harbours (DFO‑SCH) is proposing to repair a damaged breakwater at the Port Maitland Small Craft Harbour in Port Maitland, Ontario. The harbour is located at the point where the Grand River flows into the north shore of Lake Erie.

The breakwater has deteriorated over time, with armour stone shifting or falling out of place due to weathering and ice action. As a result, the structure is no longer functioning as intended.

To restore the breakwater to its original design, DFO‑SCH plans to supply and install clean armour stone and riprap over an area of approximately 450 square metres. The materials will be transported by barge to the damaged section, where an excavator will place the stone to fill voids and re‑establish the structure's integrity.

Environmental protection measures will be implemented throughout the project. These will include a sediment and erosion control plan, a spill prevention and response plan, and appropriate safety measures.
