Lake Scugog Enhancement Project

The intended purpose of the Project is to improve the recreational function of Port Perry Bay while creating a healthy nearshore habitat and providing water quality benefits. The overall objectives of the Project are to address the following: reduced depth of water, accumulation of sediment and organic matter, excessive amount of non-native aquatic vegetation, impacted water quality, impacted shoreline habitats and fisheries; and impacted aesthetics and tourism-based activities.

The primary activity involved is to dredge to navigation depth at the location to 1.8m to allow recreational opportunities to return to this area (e.g. angling, boating etc.). The dredged material will be relocated within an engineered berm, which will be managed as a wetland and associated habitats. A low-flow channel will maintain connectivity with the lake. The secondary objective of the project is to promote improved storm water management through the installation of Oil & Grit Separators and to continue maintaining the Port Perry, Ontario waterfront area with a long-term aquatic vegetation management program.

The project is also subject to Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) under provincial requirements. For federal requirements, the project will be assessed with a Parks Canada Basic Impact Assessment. The Parks Canada Agency (lead Responsible Authority), Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Transport Canada will review provide necessary approvals under their respective mandates.
