Wasauksing First Nation - Supply Island Lighthouse Demolition and Remediation

Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), in partnership with Wasauksing First Nation (WFN), are proposing a lighthouse demolition and soil remediation project located on the west side of Supply Island located to the northwest to WFN's Reserve lands in Parry Sound, Ontario.

The lighthouse, which comprises wood frame construction clad with cedar shingles, is approximately 8 m tall with a 3.6 m x 3.6 m square base set on a mortared stone foundation. A 3.6 m x 3.6 m one story building extension is present on the east side of the lighthouse, and is of more recent construction as it is covered with particle board and has a galvanized metal roof. Physical activities for this project include: proper removal of designated substances (i.e., lead paint) prior to demolition of the lighthouse and building extension; vegetation clearing; remediation (excavation) of impacted soil around the physical works; and reinstatement of disturbed inland and shoreline areas (including replanting with native species). Designated substances (i.e., lead) will be managed as hazardous wastes. All waste, including any liquid waste, generated as part of the project will be disposed off-site at an appropriately licensed facility.
