White Head Harbour Timber Wharf (Structure # 401) Repairs
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
Structure 401, the primary public wharf infrastructure in White Head Harbour, is advancing in age, and due to obvious subsidence of two sections of its deck, a structural assessment was carried out in order to assess its current condition. Inspection of Structure 401 identified failure of the south end of the bottom cribwork portion due to undermining of the timber crib. Severe deterioration of the bolted connections, loss of horizontal face timbers and decay of crosstie member ends have all contributed to the structure's current poor state. Immediate temporary repairs for stabilization of the structure are required at the south end of structure 401. The lower cribwork section has potential for complete failure.
The lateral stability of the treated timber pile bent trestle structures are currently structurally compromised due to failed bolts at the trestle bracing, corroded connections of the battered A-frame piles, and deteriorated ballast boxes. This project will replace A-frame steel connection plates, timber sheathing, access ladders, timber blocking where required, approximately 30 fender piles, 8 ballast boxes and add approximately 275 tonnes of rock protection around the structure's base.
To ensure there is no further subsidence of structure 401, concrete blocks will be installed around it's base and concrete tremie poured under the crib extending out to the newly installed concrete blocks. Rip-rap will then be placed completely covering this new support base.
With the stabilization of Structure's 401 base and repairs made to it's lateral bracing system, the wharf has an expected remaining service life of three to five years. Further extension of the useful service life of Structure 401 will require major reconstruction. The treated timber piles are in suitable condition to be incorporated in a reconstruction of this section, assuming a similar braced pile bent trestle system is maintained.
