  • I am writing to share my opposition to the rare earth mining project proposal (which is said to be the dirtiest mining in the world ) because I believe it will be detrimental to so many aspects of life in and around Nunavik. This type of mine will not only affect the land and the wildlife, but it will affect the people that call the area home, not to mention all the other communities surrounding it.   • Both personally, and as an individual trained as an ecotoxicologist I am deeply opposed to this project. The environmental implications of this project are staggering. Rare earth metal mining is extremely destructive, requiring enormous areas of land to be mined to produce the desired elemental quantities. Permitting this project to progress would not only culminate in geological upheaval on an immense scale but would also result in the potential release and bioaccumulation of trace metals, along with radioactive elements and other chemical substances. These could negatively impact the health of aquatic and terrestrial wildlife proximate to the proposed location with potential eventual population level effects. First, this mine will be located on the George River caribou herd grounds.   • My opinions and reasoning have been well touched upon by previous comments to do with this project. To return upon them, in my opinion the possibility of truly purifying the waste water is not realistic.  This will affect many important and vulnerable populations of animals, caribou and salmon just to name two, not to mention any impacts it may have on human populations not only in Kangiqsualujjuaq, but also in other Ungava communities were the contaminants to spread into the bay.

A total of 84 samples were collected during this program. It has some of the most beautiful lands and water on earth. It is the calving grounds of the George River caribou herd. To ruin this would put a terrible scar on our planet and have a detrimental effect to the animals and Inuit that live on, get subsistence from and camp with family on and around the George River Valley.  although rare earth is needed, at this time, there is not a safe way of mining it so I am apposed this project.

Time and time again we have seen how the governemnt has treated First Nations & Inuit communities.  The land will be poissoned, which will directly impact already fragile communities who struggle to get some of thier basic needs met.  As people who rely heavily on country food, what will happen when the food becomes uneatable?  We are already seeing the dramatic consequances of climate change in the north, this will add an additional challenge the people will be left to deal with.  A project only a select few will profit from.

  • The Strange Lake Mine Proposal and its methods are reminiscent of the pre-climate crisis ways.  Extraction of rare earth minerals present catastrophic risks for the George River Valley and beyond.  It is important to distinguish between different types of mining.  Rare earth mining is the dirtiest, worst type of mining and has no place in modern times when we should have learned for the errors of the past.  The area impacted from this dirty mining stretches from Sept-Îles on the North Shore to Kangiqsualujjuaq at the mouth of the George River on the shores of Ungava Bay.  Tons of chemicals involved in extracting rare minerals will be dumped in the area.  It is not realistic to believe that Torngat Metals will be able to ensure safe evacuation of these chemicals.  In addition, the 160-km access road which Torngat Metals plans to build will bring about environmental destruction on a massive scale. While I understand the need to obtain rare earth for the process of transport electrification I am stunned at the lack of opposition for such a large project. The inuit people of Nunavik live from the land and especially from the George River. They fish the salmon, the char and before harvested Caribou.    The mine will have a significant change in the landscape around strange lake. I see many issues related to the opening of this mine that will have detrimental impacts on the well being of Inuit: 1) The mine will be located on the George River caribou herd grounds. This population has decreased by 99% since 1993. The opening of an open pit mine directly in the territory of those caribou will have devastating impact on the herd. Inuit have been managing the George River population to allow an increase, but Thorngat metal project will defeat all those efforts and will put in peril a caribou herd that already have a precarious state. 2) The wastewater from the mine will flow through lake Mistinibi. This lake is the headwater source for the George River.   • As an Inuk who has spent 65 summers on the George river, I have many negative comments regarding this mining project. The area around Lake Brisson and the George river is very rich in biodiversity. It will be negatively impacted if this mine is allowed to go forward. Lake Brisson where the actual mine is proposed flows into the GR near its head waters. If it does go ahead the supposedly ''decontaminated water'' from the treatment plant at the mine will be pumped back into the lake to flow into the George river with all its radioactive elements and contamination which will then flow to the community of Kangiqsualujjuaq. This will ruin habitat for Atlantic salmon, Arctic charr, Brook trout and the other species that spawn in the river and are used for food by the Inuit of Kangiqsuallujuaq. Dans le sommaire du projet de Strange Lake (non plus dans le document initial), il n’y a aucune donnée sur la santé des Sept-Îliens. Pourtant, ces données existent à la Direction de santé publique de la Côte-Nord. Pourquoi n’ont-elles pas été prises en considération? Les différences statistiques entre les RLS de santé sont diluées en faisant des moyennes sur la Côte-Nord. Pour le RLS de Sept-Îles : sur les 27 indicateurs de santé physiques, 17 sont significativement supérieurs au reste du Québec, donc 63 %.   • Please do not build this mine.  It cuts right through the homes of Indigenous people, most of whom do not want their homes and traditional way of life destroyed by this proposed mine.  The mine will also displace caribou and many other animals.  Additionally, mining involves a lot of animal testing, with acute lethality tests on fish, and lethal sampling of free roaming wildlife.  Please stop this destructive project, and instead invest in recycling Rare Earth metals, and encourage people to stop throwing out their phones every time there is a new model.

Il s’adonne que dans les documents, j’ai lu que Torngat Metals avait l’intention de rejeter les effluents de l’usine de Sept-Îles dans la baie de Sept-Îles à un endroit pas encore connu, peut-être même en face de chez-moi. En plus, les caractéristiques de cet effluent ne sont pas encore connues. Vous savez, je suis un ancien pêcheur commercial, je connais les marées et les courants qui vont étendre la contamination partout. Le promoteur traite la baie de Sept-Îles avec mépris et manque de considération. Où est la cohérence? Ce quartier a déjà été le plus gros parc de maisons mobiles au Canada où il y a environ 1200 habitations et 5000 personnes. Selon la documentation, il y a une distance d’environ 3 km entre l’usine de séparation et Place Ferland.  Je m’inquiète d’une éventuelle infiltration de radon/thoron et/ou de leurs isotopes. Ces gaz pénètrent par des fissures ou par les égouts dans la jupe des maisons mobiles à partir des eaux de la nappe phréatique. Le radon et le thoron sont reconnus pour se transformer en particules dans les maisons ce qui cause leur toxicité.
