Piikani Wind Project

Piikani Resource Development Ltd. (PRDL) is proposing to develop the Piikani Wind Project on Piikani Nation reserve lands. The proposed project will have a capacity of 150 megawatts and will involve the construction of approximately 22-27 wind turbines and associated infrastructure. Associated infrastructure includes underground collector lines, access roads, a project collector substation, an operations and maintenance  building, a temporary construction laydown area, and temporary crane paths.

The Project area includes all or parts of 16 sections of land and is located on native grasslands currently used for grazing. There are several wetlands and intermittent watercourses in the project area but no navigable waters. Wildlife surveys indicate the presence of several listed Species at Risk including the little brown bat, the northern long-eared bat, Sprague's pipit, ferruginous hawk, long-billed curlew, and Baird's sparrow. No vegetation species listed under the Species at Risk Act were observed in the project area during the surveys.

Indigenous Services Canada will be issuing an Indian Act land instrument for this project and is therefore required by Section 82 of the Impact Assessment Act to make a determination on the project's environmental effects. Prairies Economic Development Canada has provided funding for the feasibility stages of the project and is therefore not currently required to issue a determination but may become required to at a later stage. Power generated from the project will tie into the Alberta Interconnected Electrical System.
