?aqam Community Pumphouse and Reservoir Upgrade

The proposed ʔaq̓am community water system extension (upgraded pumphouse and above ground storage tank reservoir) is located on the Kootenay #1 Reserve, approximately 9 km north of the City of Cranbrook.

The associated works begin at an existing well and pumphouse, which currently serves a cluster of four houses on the north side of the Mission-Wasa Low Road. The proposed Project will upgrade domestic water service from the existing well and distribution system by increasing the size of the existing pumphouse and adding water treatment infrastructure (chlorination). A pipeline would convey the treated water to an aboveground water storage tank on the bench above the pumphouse. Stored treated water would be redistributed to the houses that currently rely on the existing well.

The proposed Project would involve the following construction activities:

• installation of two small diameter waterlines (1 delivery, 1 return) within a single trench approximately 700 m long, located on the north side of the river;
•  installation of an aboveground storage tank; and
• expansion of the existing pumphouse building and addition of chlorination capability.

The pipeline will be installed using open cut trench excavation techniques, primarily following existing roads. The existing road crosses on the east side of the spring and associated creek, outside of the riparian boundary.

Based on a desktop review of all available information and observations made during a site field inspection of the proposed Project area, the environmental consultant concluded that 34 rare species of wildlife and nine rare species of plants had the potential to occur in the Project area. However, it was unlikely that any of the plant species and very few of the wildlife species were likely to be adversely impacted by the construction footprint. The environmental consultant has identified mitigations to reduce the potential environmental impacts.
