Simpson 3 Avalanche Path Berm, Kootenay National Park

Parks Canada is proposing to redesign the existing avalanche static defence structures in the runout zone of Simpson 3 avalanche path to reduce impacts to the Highway 93 South through Kootenay National Park. The project involves the replacement of old earthen mounds with new catchment and stopping berm designed to reduce road closures due to snow avalanches and improve winter road safety. The new stopping berm will be approximately 20m high from catchment bottom to berm crest, and be about 200m in length (perpendicular to the avalanche flow).
