Highway 93S km 20 Bank Stabilization

The current alignment of Highway 93 South occurs near or immediately adjacent to the Vermillion River at many locations. A combination of channel shifts and repeated exposure to high water have resulted in significant bank erosion within and adjacent to areas previously armored. This erosion is now affecting the embankment that supports the highway. The existing armored segments will be extended. This project will involve four sites in Kootenay National Park located 20.0 km-21.2 km south of the Highway 1 and 93 South junction.
This project will see the addition of 1175 square meters of bank armoring above high water. An estimated 670 m2 of the rip rapping will be placed below the High Water Mark. The distance from the road edge to the top of the armored embankment ranges from 0 to <15 meters. Work will be completed from the paved highway where possible. Where the High Water Mark is further from the highway, machines will move off of the highway to place the rip rap.
