Highway 93 South Passing Lanes Kootenay National Park

Highway 93 South is a key transportation route for visitors, the travelling public, and movement of goods. As per the Highway 93S Passing/Climbing Lanes Functional Planning Study dated July 29, 2020, the current traffic volume is expected to increase as per the recorded annual growth rate which is already impacting the functional service and capacity of this route. The addition of (4) passing lane segments along with a short section of road realignment for Highway 93 South (Hwy 93S) to enhance the roadway assets and provide road users with a safer, and smoother passage through the National Parks. Currently the route does not meet desirable passing opportunity guidelines for an arterial roadway. The proposed realignment is recommended to improve roadway safety by shifting the highway away from an existing slope that is a high-risk category geological hazard. Proposed passing lane locations: • North Bound km 52.1 to km 50.5 • North Bound km 28.8 to km 27.4 • South Bound km 24.6 to km 26.6 • South Bound km 93.8 to km 94.5 Proposed roadway realignment location: • North and South Bound km 27.4 to km 26.6 Total estimated disturbed footprint for the passing lanes is approximately 9.0 ha within the existing roadway corridor (not including existing pavement area). A total of 5.7 km of passing lane and 0.8 km of roadway realignment is proposed to be added along Hwy 93S
