Cascade Creek Restoration Large Woody Debris Installation

This project is part of the broader Cascade Creek Restoration Project, for which a Basic Impact Assessment (BIA) was approved by the Field Unit Superintendent in September 2018 (BNP 1008). The goal of this phase is to improve habitat suitability and instream cover for westslope cutthroat trout by adding large woody debris to the stream channel using post assisted log structures (PALS) and by felling select trees into the channel using a grip hoist. Instream cover is an essential habitat component of healthy trout streams. Large woody debris is currently limited in Cascade Creek due to dam regulation, resulting in reduced habitat complexity and altered natural processes for the newly introduced westlope cutthroat trout. Strategic placement of log structures (PALS) will minimize potential effects on downstream infrastructure by acting as a "catcher's mitt", catching woody debris before it reaches downstream culverts. Structures will not span the full channel width.
