Seech-Hopper 3 Prescribed Fire

The Seech Hopper Prescribed Fire Unit is a 6,000-ha area in the Grasshopper Valley and Seech Prairie areas, located between Lake Audy and Whitewater Lake in RMNP. The unit is primarily in an aspen parkland area, with some large remnant patches of rough fescue and mixed grasslands. The threat to these patches is they are shrinking due to forest encroachment from lack of disturbance. Aerial extent of grassland is approximately 3% of what it was in 1930. The lack of fire has also increased fuel loads and increased risk to neighbouring lands from wildfire. Park Management objectives of increasing the grasslands aerial extent by 240 ha/year can be partially achieved by this burn as well as a CoRe objective of burning 2000 ha of aspen parkland. The core grassland areas of ~400 ha will be maintained by fire and expanded upon. This will be the third application of fire over a 15-year period, with the first two treatments showing good success at restoring grasslands that have been encroached upon by aspen and boreal mixed wood, while reducing fuel load and continuity adjacent to the park boundaries. The burn unit, scheduled for spring, is guarded by a combination of wetlands, guard burns, and prescription.
