Trans Mountain Miette River Encroachment 2 (KP386.75)

This project will be assessed with a basic impact assessment. Trans Mountain Pipeline ULC is proposing a bank armouring project along a 40-metre section of the Miette River in Jasper National Park. Ground inspections identified a geohazard at pipeline KP386.75, where the eroded Miette riverbank is now only 2.9 m from the Line 1 pipeline. If no action is taken, continuing erosion by the river could expose the pipeline within two years. The goal of the project is to prevent further encroachment of the river towards the pipeline to protect the line from being exposed and damaged in the future. Trans Mountain plans to achieve this by installing rip rap apron and a raised earthen bank where the river has eroded the slope by the pipeline. The project will require access along the pipeline right-of-way, temporary workspace in a previously disturbed area and disturbance of 1-2 hectares to construct the riprap apron and berm. The work is tentatively planned for fall 2026 and will take a small workforce about one month to complete.
